How to recognize a Phishing attack and how to protect yourself from it?

Phishing is a form of online fraud where attackers try to trick people into revealing their personal information, such as passwords, credit card numbers or other sensitive information. They do this by sending fake messages that appear to come from trusted sources, such as banks, social networks or other institutions. To the layman, it can be most easily explained as “online fraud” where fraudsters impersonate well-known institutions in order to obtain your confidential information. Anyone can be a victim of such attacks – individuals of all ages, companies and even public institutions. Fraudsters often target the most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly or the less technologically literate, but no one is immune to such attacks. It is important to always be careful because just as security technologies are developing more and more, hackers and fraudsters are becoming more cunning and technologically advanced.

How to protect yourself?

Protection against phishing attacks itself involves several steps. For starters, always check the source of the message or call, if it seems suspicious, don’t reply or click on the links. Next, use antivirus programs and regularly update the software on all devices. Never share your personal information via e-mail, SMS or phone calls without confirming the identity of the sender or caller. Finally, education is key – be aware of the different types of attacks and familiarize yourself with protection methods. Do not post or share too much information about yourself on social networks or other online communication channels without a need and a clear purpose. Information that has been published once remains online forever, and can later always be used for fraud attempts.

It is important to note that phishing attacks are not only a financial threat that can lead to serious financial losses, but can also cause emotional stress and undermine trust in digital services and technology. Therefore, it is crucial to continuously work on raising awareness and strengthening protective measures in order to reduce the risk of such attacks.
